I just finished perusing the faculty photos looking for the teacher I was in love with - it was Mrs. Oertel (history). That woman (probably twenty-something at the time) was just so cool I looked forward to her class every day just so I could bask in her wonderfulness. she really was very bright, funny and smart but more than that she was the standard of female beauty and personality for me from that point forward. I still haven't met anyone that was as sophisticated as I thought she was! I'm wondering if anybody else felt that way about her?

I had Mrs. Oertel for history. She also was a pacer and lectured from start of class time to end without a break in order to get us ready for college classes. I recently came across my notes from her class on the Civil War -- or more aptly the War Between the States, since no war is civil. Surprised I kept these as history was not one of my favorite subjects at that time.

I had Mr. Elkins for a history class. He taught as though we were college students, which brought out the best in me. Of course, the "best" wasn't too stellar! You're right...he did pace. Wonder whatever became of him.

What a character! Got a love of maps from his class. To this day I cannot look at a green M&M or Dr. Pepper without thinking of Mr. Stafford. Anyone else remember his bonus point question on each quiz? One that stayed with me was one I couldn't answer and found embarassing - What is the world's largest bra size? (slightly sexist & politically incorrect)

Dean Elkins - English

I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Elkins' English classes in spite of the fact that he paced constantly which was a little distracting to me. I always wondered about his yellow skin-tone - the rumor mill was that he had malaria when stationed in Vietnam.

Jim, I wrote to you a minute ago, but something happened to it, so here goes again....

I think of Mr. Elkins every time I walk down his old street. All our girls live within a mile one way or the other of that neighborhood that we grew up in and where Mr. Elkins lived. I, too, wonder what happened to him. He was so cool...we need to find him.

Tell Martha Hi...we were in the same play group in 1877-1980.....it was such fun. I've lost touch with her, so I'd love her e-mail. Must run.
